Job Purpose
We are seeking an experienced Principal Officer to provide expert leadership and specialist advice within Public Protection and Licensing. This is a senior professional role, supporting service delivery, performance improvement, and complex casework across a regulatory environment. You will act as a subject-matter expert within your discipline, lead on high-profile and complex cases, support service development, and mentor officers to ensure high standards of enforcement and compliance.
Working Arrangements - Agile working with regular on-site presence in Westminster. Occasional out-of-hours working may be required to meet service needs.
Your new role
- Provide high-level professional and technical advice across Public Protection and Licensing.
- Lead or support complex, high-profile and politically sensitive cases.
- Support the Team Manager with operational delivery and performance management.
- Supervise, mentor and support officers on casework, enforcement techniques and procedures.
- Lead on staff training, quality assurance and best-practice development.
- Develop and maintain service policies, procedures and improvement initiatives.
- Act as discipline expert, advising officers, managers, Members and stakeholders on new or changing legislation.
- Build effective partnerships with internal teams, agencies and external stakeholders.
- Lead on specific projects and service initiatives.
- Manage delegated resources and ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
What you will need to succeed
- Significant experience within Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing, or a related regulatory discipline.
- Experience handling complex, high-profile or sensitive complaints.
- Strong understanding of enforcement, risk management and public accountability.
- Proven ability to mentor staff, lead projects and drive service improvement.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Degree or Diploma in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing).
- or equivalent professional qualification or substantial experience.
- Role-specific professional registration required where applicable (e.g. Food / EHO roles).
